2014年リリースの『POPCOCOON』から実に5年ぶりとなるサード・アルバムがリリース。さらには、2019年4月にはフォース・アルバムとなる『やさしい哺乳類』のリリースも決定した。青葉市子とのDUOであるNUUAMMや寺尾紗穂の新譜へのゲスト参加、バンドではテニスコーツとの合作など、様々なコラボレーションでうたの可能性を探してきたシンガーソングライターとしての活動と、そして、２０18年には今年屈指のオルタナティブ・アルバムとして評価も高い『Silence Will Speak』のリリースがあったGEZANの活動を経て完成した作品となる。

当サード・アルバム『不完全なけもの』は、寺尾紗穂、知久寿焼（ex たま）など、これまでの活動で出会い、音をつむいできた孤高のゲストが参加した８曲を収録。「平成がおわるまでにつくりたかった」とマヒトゥ・ザ・ピーポーが語る今作は、未来の視点から現代に贈られた、愛と皮肉が散りばめられた手紙のようでもあり、あたりまえの生活をSFの視点から詩的にとらえた作品になっている。アルバムは、全編をつうじて言葉に優しい眼差しが宿り、アコースティックな温もりのあるサウンドとヴォーカルの響きは美しい。そして8曲それぞれバラエティに富んだ楽曲は、アルバムにさまざまな表情をあたえ、そのどれもが文学的な批評性をもっている。

アルバムの幕開けとなるM-①「Wonderful World」が穏やかにシネマティックな世界に誘い、続くM-②「HEAVEN SEVEN DAYS」でその世界はより明確な輪郭を描きだす。M-③「frozen moon」、先行MVが予定されているM-④「失敗の歴史」はアルバムのハイライトととも言える楽曲で、それぞれが心を揺さぶる言葉とメロディをもって聴く人に届くだろう。アルバムの後半は、前半とも異なる表情を見せていき、アルバムは最後の曲M-⑧「Holy day」の壮大な幕切れまで一瞬たりとも聞き逃すことをゆるしてくれない。

多岐にわたる活動、創作を経てたどりついたマヒトゥ・ザ・ピーポーの最新作は、そのシンガーソングライターの成熟、充実が感じられるマスターピースとなっている。
